Here in my car, I feel safest of all, I can lock all my doors, it’s the only way to live, in cars. So sang electronerd-cabaret-dictator Gary Numan back in the day. And now it looks like he was on to something!
New research suggests that all of us should stop worrying about the environment and car sharing and all that crap and just spend our days driving around on our own from one place to another.
Skoda-funded scientists have found that we are at our happiest tooling around solo in our vehicle of choice, and this, it seems, is the answer to a healthier life. Yes way!
Six out of ten of us are apparently never happier than when driving around with no-one for company but our own sweet selves.
If we had to have a passenger – God forbid – most of us would choose – not Iggy Swiftcover, but – either Cheryl Cole or Stephen Fry, presumably for slightly different reasons.
“Driving on your own gives you time to think,” says psychaeologist Gladeana McMahon. Ten per cent of her survey respondents agree. Some like looking at the scenery. Virtually all like listening to “the radio or music.”
“Given the hectic 24/7 lifestyles we all now seem to lead,” says the lady named after an imaginary land where air-fresheners frolic freely, “the car has become a sanctuary for us to escape to, away from the stresses and strains* of everyday life.”
So it’s true then, as the saying goes: “L’enfer, c’est les autres.”
*Bankstone News supposes that you probably have to be psychologist to understand the crucial distinction between stresses and strains.
