Rather than the notorious scandal involving secret US Congress funding for the toupee and man-girdle of William Shatner, Kirkgate, as far as this story is concerned at least, refers to the name of the non-descript street in North Yorkshire market town Thirsk, where, at number 23, to be precise, stands the Grade II Georgian terraced house in which formerly resided and practised the celebrated author and vetinarian James Herriot (real name Alf Wight), here pictured as a child atop a large motorcycle, on whose novels various films and television series sharing permutations on the title All Creatures Great and Small (adapted from Herriot’s daughter’s original suggestion that his book should be call Ill Creatures Great and Small) are based, and where, at what is now a museum known as the World of James Herriot, the monkey-bike mounted charity fundraising team put together by Bankstone and assorted business partners, friends and associates will be parking up and re-enacting some famous scene from Herriot’s oeuvre‚ and let’s face it there is one scene, of an obstetric nature, let us say, that stands out above all others in most people’s memory‚ before mounting up again and continuing on their way round the remainder of the 10 famous film locations located within the county of Yorkshire scheduled as stop-offs along the route of a charity initiative you are almost certain to want to support by visiting www.justgiving.com/monkeymoviestars and pledging your generous support: Bankstone’s 2009 fundraising exercise, Monkey Moviestars, whose aim is to raise much-needed funds for the life-saving work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service.
