Just back from his latest transglobal motorsport factfinding mission, Bankstone director Dickon Tysoe tells outlandish tales of snow, skiis, saunas, salmon, sausages, ice racing and of course beer in Finland.
As well as witnessing the Finnish national ice racing championship on a frozen lake at Ranta Pertin, Dickon reports dips in frozen lakes, snow rolling buff-style, elk hunting and quad biking on ice with standard tyres (“quite slidy”).
Competitors in the five races staged by the Finnish Motorcycle Federation at Ranta Pertin, just south of Jamsa in central Finland, were better equipped, with hundreds of half-inch metal spikes around their tyres.
Events included bikes, quadbikes and sidecar racing. Snowploughs cleared the track of churned ice between races.
